Because of the rapid growth of Christianity, the Apostles found themselves hard-pressed to look after all the needs of the thousands accepting Jesus and beginning to follow His teachings. In a short time, complaints began to arise. As more men became involved in the activities of the Apostles, it was evident that some of the physical needs of the people were not being met. A demand was being placed on the Apostles' time and energies. In order for the problems to be taken care of, the Apostles came up with a 'God idea.' They called all their disciples together and instructed them in Acts 6:3 to '...seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business' (caring for the needs of the people). The choices and appointment of these men would allow the Apostles to continue giving themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word. The deacons did not become a controlling Board, but lovingly looked after the widows, orphans, elderly and church business. Deacons do not run the business of the church, but carry it out under the supervision of the pastoral staff. In reality, deacons are an arm of the pastor and not his head.
